Is Jackery portable power station good? This is a comprehensive analysis of Jackery and its selection of portable power stations. Find out what makes them distinctive and whether they’re the right one for you.
In the past few decades, portable power stations and solar generators have gained popularity.
With Jackery possibly the most well-known among the multitude of businesses available.
They can be used for a variety of practical applications, all the way to camping, and even providing power to homes in the event of power failures.
We were excited to find out whether Jackery could be a viable option to provide power in an existing van conversion.
Below, I’ll look at Jackery products starting beginning with their smaller Explorer 160 and up to their massive Explorer 1500.
Then, ultimately, decide if Jackery is worth it!
Let’s get stuck in …
Who Are Jackery?
Jackery is among the most renowned brands in terms of producing high-end, portable power stations.
We first encountered them in 2021, when a group of van lifers from the same community began discussing more and more these”so-called “portable power stations” and “solar generators.
At the time, I knew very little about electronics and was already fully invested in the intricate details of the conversion of our campervan.
After that, when I began paying more attention did I realize these Jackery units could prove to be an option for the long term for a lot of van lifers.
In contrast to the cost and complexity of building an entirely off-grid electric system in the van, the Jackery device is able to offer all the off-grid charging capabilities you require.
Additionally, with the ability to recharge the units with solar power and even plug them into the outlet of a cigarette while driving, we were eager to see how they performed.
In this article, I’ll discuss more in-depth:
- What kinds of products does Jackery offer?
- The differences between solar power generators and portable power stations
- How does Jackery stand up against its competitors?
- The overall appearance and feel
- In the end, whether or not they’re worth the money
My goal is to be as comprehensive as I can while making it simple to comprehend for those who want simple and quick answers.

Jackery Solar Generators Vs Portable Power Station: What’s The Difference
It’s more complicated to grasp the Jackery range when you realize they offer a broad variety of power stations and also a variety of generators for solar.
Like me, you might initially be thinking … But what’s the difference between a portable power station and a solar generator?
Are solar-powered generators more powerful?
Do I need a solar generator or a power station?
Let me clear this up.
The solar generator is a portable power station, coupled with one or more Jackery solar panels.
There isn’t any difference whatsoever between the two units. It is simply an assortment of Jackery products that creates a solar generator.
Jackery currently offers six bundles of solar generators

Buy on AmazonWhich option should you choose?
In simple terms … the answer all depends entirely on whether you require charging your battery while on the move during the day.
As an example, suppose you are looking for a device that you can carry every day for work, in order to serve as a power tool DIY charging station, then decide to bring it home every evening to charge it you, then there’s no need for.
In this instance, the device itself is sufficient in the event that you purchase one that is large enough to accommodate the charges you require for each day.
However in the event that you plan to go out camping for a few days or weeks and you don’t have any other option to charge your battery while traveling, then solar generators might be a great option.
Then, connect the solar panel to the unit. So long as you have sunlight the panel will be able to recharge your Jackery unit while you are camping.
In that regard …
Jackery Solar Panels Review
I must be honest about this …
I was actually more amazed by the solar panels of Jackery than I was by the device itself!
It’s because I hadn’t really thought too much of the unit prior to it coming in. I thought of it as an accessory in the same unit. It was a bit odd to own but wasn’t the most practical option.
In all reality, I believe it’s an awesome piece of kit!
We have huge, bulky solar panels in our van. They are attached to the rooftop of the van, and they’re great.
However, from what I’d learned about these panels, which are portable and flexible I didn’t think they were enough or worth the money.
First, what you’ll notice about Jackery panels is just how small they are. They’re extremely well-constructed and fold to a very pleasing extent.
They’re also lightweight and light, especially the 100W model (that we have reviewed) not exceeding 5kg.
The process of setting them up is incredibly easy. There are two stands at the back of the unit that are secured with velcro. All you need to do is open the unit, then place it up on its sides, ideally toward the sun. The cable is attached to the back, which can be connected to it. Jackey unit.
Then, that’s it!
There’s something known as MPPT. It is a device called MPPT which is required to convert solar energy into usable battery storage. In our van, it’s small and bulky. It needs to be wired up.
The Jackery MPPT is built into the power station, which means you don’t have to fret about settings or anything similar to that.
Furthermore, it is the Solarpeak(tm) tech MPPT is designed and modified by Jackery themselves This means that it’s the most efficient way of charging the unit.
However, what I was most surprised about was the fact that you can actually connect your small gadgets (like smartphones) straight to the rear of the device.
What’s cool!?
So, if you’re heading somewhere that is warm for a few days, and have only your phone to charge and charge, you might be able to get away with just using the solar panel!
You can leave it in the open area of your tent. Then plug in your phones to the back, and you’re done.
They are able to withstand moderate drizzle (not severe rain) If the weather gets a change, then you’re in a position to bring them in.
Regarding the speed at which they charge their units, it is based on a variety of factors that include:
- How much light there is
- What size are you? Jackery unit?
If you buy one of the 1500W models of solar power generator and they provide you with four panels. This will naturally mean you’ll have additional kits to set up however, it will allow you to charge your device from 0-80 percent in only 4 hours. That’s pretty impressive!
Most people will find that even if you only have a JACKERRY 500 device, and one 100W power panel (the setup we used) this will be enough for keeping the device filled up all day long even if you’re charging several devices at once.
It all depends on the amount of energy you are drawing and how much sun is.
The bottom line is that The solar panels of Jackery are compact and lightweight. They are easy to install and work flawlessly when used in conjunction with an existing unit. They are a great option to help keep your unit fully charged and are worth the cost, even when compared to the hard-wired solar panels that you could purchase.
If you purchase a Jackery Solar Generator kit, it is likely that they will send you at least one of their 100W version in your Kit (see this table for the specifics).
If you decide to purchase them separately, then Jackery currently has 3 dimensions of solar panels:
- Jackery SolarSaga 200W(not sold in all countries)
- Jackery SolarSaga 100W
- Jackery SolarSaga 60W
Jackery Portable Power Stations Review: Key Features Explained
In the next section, I’ll discuss the six variations that comprise the Jackery unit, and which one is more suitable.
I’d also like to look at each of the features that come with these Jackery units.
These are the primary criteria with which you could evaluate portable power stations to see how they compare.
Knowing the answer to the query “Is Jackery portable power station good” and the way Jackery does its job will help you determine if they’re the right model for you, and if they are which size should you select.
First, let’s talk about …
Capacity Explained (Watts Vs Watt Hours)
Watts
Watts (W) is a measurement of power. Power is the rate that a device generates or uses energy.
In simple terms in simple terms, the greater the Watt measurement of the Jackery device the more powerful device you can use it.
For instance, the largest Jackery device is the 1500W model. This lets you run devices operating at a level of power between 1800 and 2000 watts.
This covers items like coffee makers and microwaves. These typically range between 800 and 1200 watts.
To get a complete review of how to calculate the Watt ranges of every Jackery unit, look at the table below.
Watt Hours
As a comparison, Watt Hours (Wh) is a measurement of energy. It measures how much work is created or carried out.
In simple words, the more Wh number on your Jackery The more energy you’ll have to work with.
For instance, the 500W blender that you run for three hours straight would use up to 1500Wh. It’s true that you’d have to be genuinely obsessed with smoothies to consume this much energy however, you’ll get my point.
The number on each Jackery unit is the number of Watt Hours the unit can produce (at least, approximately).
Bottom Line
Here’s the length and short of it. Jackery has 6 dimensions of energy stations.
- Explorer 1500 – 1800 Watts / 1534 Watt Hour capacity
- Explorer 1000 – 1000 Watts / 1002 Watt Hour capacity
- Explorer 500 – 500 Watts / 518 Watt Hour capacity
- Explorer 300 – 300 Watts / 293 Watt Hour capacity
- Explorer 240 – 200 Watts / 240 Watt Hour capacity
- Explorer 160 – 100 Watts / 167 Watt Hour capacity
Also, the bigger the unit you select the more powerful appliance will be and the larger the amount of energy that you can utilize for fully charged units.
Next, in the section below, I’ll provide some different cases, each of which is a different size to help you decide which size is right for you.
How Does Jackery Stack Up?
Once we have a better understanding of the various capacities available It begs the question …
How does Jackery compare against other portable power stations?
Actually, pretty well!
All manufacturers of these devices are constrained by the technology available today and, basically that if you need more power, you need to construct a larger and more powerful unit.
Therefore, I’d say that the most important aspect to look at is not just whether the units of Jackery are stronger than their counterparts but whether the power-to-size ratio compares to other units.
In this instance it is true.
All of their products are made to be hand-held and portable, without the requirement of fitting wheels at the bottom of the unit.
They could certainly create the 3000Wh model or one that is 10,000Wh like other brands.
However, if they did, they’d be much bigger and not suitable for the kind of public Jackery seeks to attract.
We put our Explorer 500-watt power generator the chance to test it thoroughly and found it to be nearly perfect to meet our needs for everything we want.
In addition, we charge our laptops on the road as well as phones and even The Cazzy’s Nintendo Switch.
In actuality, if we were really looking to complete all that our in-built camper electrical system can do, we’d have to make use of Explorer 1000.
This is due to the fact that Cazzy’s machine for coffee is 1000W, and the 500 would not have enough power to operate.
What sets Jackery apart from the majority of its rivals is the wide variety of stations it has available.
It’s possible to consider your specific requirements and purchase one that can do the job you want it to. For instance, if are planning to camp for a few weeks and the only thing you want to charge is your mobile devices, then you’ll be able to do that with the Explorer 160.
However, if you plan to go off-grid for longer durations and need to power devices with high watts, then the 500 or 1000, or even 1500 is a better choice.
This wide variety of sizes, particularly at the lower ends of the spectrum does aid in making Jackery the perfect brand for people of all ages.
Inverter Sizes
Inverters are what enable the Jackery units to provide the greater AC voltage required for powering consumer electronics.
Depending on where you live Your household’s power can vary from 100V to 250V.
In the UK it’s 240V. However, the actual lithium-ion batteries within the Jackery are much smaller DC voltage. Therefore, an inverter is required to increase the voltage to properly charge your devices.
Inverters are available in various sizes. The more powerful the inverter the more watts it puts out.
As I mentioned above, I’ve looked at the different dimensions of the watts in different Explorer units, so all you have to know is the fact that Jackery Inverters work as reliably as they can get.
The sine waves can be described as ” pure sine waves”. It’s not necessary to dive into the specifics that go into the making of pure sine waves and modified sine waves. All you have to be aware of is the fact that sine waves are the superior one of the two.
If you go through the technical specifications for each Jackery unit, you’ll notice it includes the “surge power” rating.
It refers to the high energy that the inverter is able to be able to run but typically is only able to run for a short time.
In the end, figure out how powerful the device is that you’ll need to connect to your Jackery, and then, purchase an item that has this as a standard feature, not just based on its surge ratings.
Different Outlets
When you look at a close examine each Jackery Explorer, you will find that they all come with different outlets.
Another way to think about it is that the more powerful the appliance you select the greater number of outlets it’ll include. I’ve included an extensive listing of outlets in the complete table below.
Each has a minimum of one AC outlet for connecting larger gadgets (with those with the Explorer 160, it’s located on one side and not on the front).
In terms of the size of each unit, the range of outlets is quite impressive.
The idea is to load each unit with 10 outlets, but because of the smaller capacity, it’s ineffective since the unit won’t be able to supply enough power to all of them simultaneously!
As you climb up on the Explorer 1500, you will find three AC outlets, one DC outlet, as well as 3 distinct USB ports.
So you can power or charge up seven devices at once!
This is quite impressive in comparison to leading brands, like GoalYeti and GoalYeti, whose similar 1500W model has only 2 AC outlets.
In reality, the main point is that each device comes with plenty of outlets to use what you will require to utilize.
They’re also simple to operate. For instance, in order to supply electricity to your connected AC devices all you need to do is turn on the button that says “AC”.
One thing we noticed is that when you get higher-powered devices, you’ll hear the Jackery sound a thumping.
It’s likely to be an inverter activating although it’s not excessively big and it will stop when you stop requiring the higher level of power.
We noticed this most often when we ran our blender.
The only comparison I could make is between the sound of the Jackery and the noise that is thrown off by the massive 1500W inverter that we have hooked to form a part of the campervan’s built-in electrical system.
In actuality, it’s nothing more than a whisper.
Ease-Of-Use
We should not be a nuisance and ramble about the subject.
In actuality, it’s not necessary to be knowledgeable about electronic devices beyond checking the chargers for your gadgets to figure out how much power it needs.
After that, plug the plug or USB into the holes in the Jackery and then turn the button.
That’s it!
Every device has a lovely tiny display screen that displays how much battery remains in the device and allows you to see the speed at which you use power, and also when it will need to recharge.
Connecting the solar panel (more on that later) is simple since there is a single (or two, if you opt for the 1500 version) inlet to fit it.
Once the plug is in, the display screen will inform you how much power is entering the Jackery.
If you’re camping and you have devices charging and solar power coming into the area, you will be able to check if you’re drawing more energy than you are putting into.
Charge Time
There are three ways to charge for your Jackery units. They are:
- The mains charger – plugging it in at home or on a campsite
- Solar charge – using the help of one of Jackery’s solar panel
- Car Charge – plugging in the outlet of your cigarette while driving
The exact time to add the charge to a unit is dependent on the one you decide to utilize, the size of it, and also how much charge the unit currently has.
For a quick guideline Here’s the time it takes to fully charge each Jackery unit between 0-80% using a mains power:
- Explorer 1500 – 6 hours
- Explorer 1000 – 7 hours
- Explorer 500 – 7.5 hours
- Explorer 300 – 4.5 hours
- Explorer 240 – 5.5 hours
- Explorer 160 – 5 hours
These numbers do raise several interesting issues. Like, it’s actually faster to charge a 1000Wh unit than the 500Wh. Because it has an extra adaptor.
Therefore, if the rate of recharge is crucial for you, it might actually be better in the long run for you to purchase an extra powerful model. However, be mindful that this is just the case when charging via mains when it comes to solar or car charging, it’ll take longer to charge larger models.
Overall, the Explorer 1500 is probably the most impressive of the Explorer 1500, running faster than the Explorer 500, despite being three times bigger!
The amount of time required to recharge solar light will vary based on how much sunlight is available in addition to the number of solar panels you connect up.
For instance, The Explorer 1500 can be recharged in only 5 hours if you have sufficient light and all four panels are connected.
With just one panel of the 500 unit, it’ll take 9 and one-half hours.
Portability
This is what I love about Jackery and what I believe they stand out from the other players.
With their comparable capacity levels for their capacity levels, the Jackery units are very mobile.
They’re lightweight enough to be able to carry them for a long time without having wheels or any other similar device.
This is, according to the basic physical laws of nature, the more powerful the unit you select the bigger the battery cells it has and the heavier it weighs.
The Jackery Explorer 500 which we have used weighs just 6kg. I found it extremely comfortable to carry for extended periods of time without stress.
The handle is easy to hold and the product isn’t too heavy So I didn’t notice it crashing into objects.
Overall Build Quality
If you decide to purchase an inexpensive portable solar system and you’ll find that to reduce costs, they’ll have to sacrifice quality build to a certain degree.
This is the way of life for any consumer electronic.
However, I can confidently declare that Jackery’s stations are exceptionally well-designed.
They’ve got nice chunks of rubber around the base of the housing to provide it with a grippy feel and also safeguard the housing while stationary.
It also feels solid, constructed of high premium plastic which you do not think is likely to break after a bump.
I’ve already talked regarding solar panels mentioned above and again, I was most likely amazed by their style and functionality of them more than anything else.
They effortlessly fold up by magnets. They are light and simple to carry around.
You could also purchase a carrying case to carry your Jackery that, let’s be honest, is worth the purchase.
It’s a great way to add another layer of protection for your station that’s worthwhile if you’re paying hundreds of dollars for a new station.
Ours was extremely well-constructed and easy to hold. There are different sizes of cases that are available, each one made specifically to fit the dimensions of the device and the necessary chargers and cables you’ll need to carry.
You can find a complete listing of these listed in the table of products below.
Jackery Models: 1500 Vs 1000 Vs 500 Vs 300 Vs 240 Vs 160
If you’ve made it to this point in our review, then you can see that we’re very fond of Jackery.
There are definitely less expensive brands available However, there are brands that are more costly.
When you put all of the above together, including construction quality, user-friendliness as well as aftercare service, Jackery is arguably the most reliable in the industry.
The only thing left to determine is which size is the best to choose.
It really does depend on your specific circumstances such as:
- How long do you expect to get rid of the unit?
- You can decide if you want to charge your solar panel
- What kinds of devices are required to charge?
- How many devices do you require to charge at any given time?
Eliminating technical jargon Jackery offers simple examples that will help you understand how long each piece of equipment is expected to last.
They include:
Product | 5w Camping Light | 10w Camera | Laptop (Macbook Pro 13) | Smartphone (iPhone 8) | 60w Drone | 500w Blender |
Jackery Explorer 1500 | 300 Hours | 75 Charges | 15 Charges | 150 Charges | 27 Charges | 3 Hours |
Jackery Explorer 1000 | 200 Hours | 50 Charges | 10 Charges | 100 Charges | 18 Charges | 2 Hours |
Jackery Explorer 500 | 100 Hours | 25 Charges | 5 Charges | 50 Charges | 9 Charges | 1 Hour |
Jackery Explorer 300 | 60 Hours | 14 Charges | 4 Charges | 30 Charges | 5 Charges | – |
Jackery Explorer 240 | 48 Hours | 11 Charges | 3.5 Charges | 24 Charges | 4 Charges | – |
Jackery Explorer 160 | 32 Hours | 6.5 Charges | 2.5 Charges | 16 Charges | 3 Charges | – |
Overall Verdict: Is Jackery Worth It?
Let’s get to the bottom of it Is Jackery worth the cost? Is Jackery portable power station good?
Sincere … yes, I truly believe so.
As I said they’re not the most expensive brand available however they’re certainly not the most expensive.
The fact is that they are the most value-for-money solutions for power stations.
Sincerely I think that when we first started the conversion of our van back in 2020, and our budget was smaller I’m sure we would have chosen one of these alternatives had we been conscious.
For van-lifers for van lifers, the Jackery solar generator is essentially able to do the task of:
- Leisure batteries
- Inverter
- Solar panels
- MPPT
- Battery charger
- Split charge relay / B2B
- 240v outlets
- USB outlets
- 12v fuse board
- Most wiring
If you’re planning an expense-conscious conversion you can save money (as well as time) by buying one of the higher three versions of the products Jackery has to offer.
The system allows you to run 90% of the equipment you’d need to survive in a vehicle including mobile phones, travel drones lighting, and cooking equipment.
There are even some luxuries such as a small heater blender or coffee maker.
Then connect it to your cigarette charger while driving and plug the solar panel in while you’re parked.
In the end I’m not saying that it is true that having an in-built system is extremely helpful in a van.
But, it’s more costly and labor-intensive to build and maintain.
I believe Jackery provides most van-lifers with an affordable and low-cost camping accessory to get their electric systems off the ground, and allow them to go on long and short trips.
